Several thousand Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) winter in Hong Kong every year.  

They gather in noisy, quarrelsome groups and hunt for fish en masse.  They are the Millwall F C supporters of the bird world: -
"Nobody Loves Us, We Don't Care ! "

Mai Po Nature Reserve is surrounded by areas of commercial fishponds.  In these freshwater fish are "farmed" for the Hong Kong dinner table.
Hong Kong's Property developers see fishponds as potential building sites… they are large, cheap and flat.

The less-than-ideal viewing conditions for waders didn't seem to matter when this Black-capped Kingfisher was patrolling the mudflats in front of the boardwalk hide.

Thanks to a tip-off from Martin Hale - who saw a flock of thirteen at dusk on Sunday evening - I went round to Tsim Bei Tsui at first light today and was fortunate to see two individual Amur Falcons.

We covered just over 5,000 km with our friends from Hong Kong in the second half of August.  Thanks to Anthony and Doris for organizing a memorable trip, and everyone else for being good company. After they went back to Hong Kong  we reverted to our usual travel mode - the bus network !

I'm happy to report that Heimahe now has a guesthouse where going to the toilet does not involve stumbling around in the dark outside.

Referring to James A Jobling's "Helm Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names" I find that  Podoces is Greek for "Swift-footed, quick"...
Jobling also reveals hendersoni to be a reference to Lt-Col George Henderson, 1837-1929, a British Army Explorer.

Out to the Mai Po Nature Reserve boardwalk today, 28th September.
The tide came in quite quickly, but the birds stayed around until they were reasonably close to the hides, then took off in strong sunlight.
They're heading south, of course, away from their breeding grounds, and some juvenile plumages were in evidence.

Around midday today I travelled back to Sheung Shui from Tuen Mun (along Yuen Long Highway) on a Public Light Bus. 
I was gazing at the unfamiliar surroundings in Lam Tei when I noticed what looked like a rolled-up piece of matting at the base of the perspex sound barrier beside the carriageway.  The "matting" had bright orange eyes and ear tufts....  it was an Eagle Owl !

The hindcollar should eliminate Greater and Lesser Sand Plovers, and these don't usually return to Hong Kong in juvenile plumages until late july.

The bird was first seen on  February 20, 2011 from boardwalk, Mai Po Nature Reserve, and seen again on the following day 

These were the first sightings of this species in Hong Kong for twenty years.  However the bird proved very elusive and a lot of people missed it in February.

As people were looking almost simultaneously at different angles at Spoon-billed Sandpipers, it seems likely there were two individuals on the incoming tide this morning.
Obviously, I didn't get shots of the other bird.  But I'm pleased with this result and I think I'll get over my disappointment !

The star of the show - first spotted by Annika Forsten and some other visiting Finnish birders - was a winter plumage Spoon-billed Sandpiper.










 April 5th is a public holiday (Ching Ming Festival), so it will be very busy at Mai Po tomorrow !

It was cold when I got back to Hong Kong last Sunday evening (Jan 30th).  But today,  three days later,  there has been a distinct warmth in the air. It must be the approach of Lunar New Year, which heralds the start of the spring in south China.



Along the access road to Mai Po, I saw about eighty Little Swifts. I brought the photo file to the UK with me on a memory stick.

I saw the Grey Heron giving this snake a good tug before the snake managed to escape.   Both the Heron and the Little Egret close by manage to look alarmed or excited.

Last Saturday (20th Nov 2010) we decided to get away from the madding crowds elsewhere and birded Shek Kong Water Catchment Road.

It is advanced secondary woodland - like Tai Po Kau - and many of TPK's resident birds are there too.

However we found one rarity - a Speckled Piculet.
