Nordmann's Greenshanks, like most of the other waders, have usually headed north by the end of May.
This one lingered at the Mai Po boardwalk yesterday, with a few representatives of the other species that have gone through in the last 8 - 10 weeks.
Seen here with Curlew Sandpiper and Red Knot.
The Nordmann's even flashed his white underwings a couple of times; normally an identification feature that doesn't much feature.

Also still about was this Grey-tailed Tattler:-
A couple of Great Knot..
A flock of mostly Greater Sand Plovers (a couple of Curlew Sands in there, too)
and, finally, these non-breeding Black-faced Spoonbills
I wonder how many will linger through the Mai Po summer ?
These are some great shots of the Nordmann's. Well done, John.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mun !
DeleteGreat shots John, the 3 species together being my fave.
ReplyDeleteHi Stu, Well, we've still got some variety, even if we don't have big numbers of waders
DeleteIt's interesting that you still have a "red" Curlew Sandpiper, as there is one at Werribee too which is unusual for this late in the season. Great to see the colouring in the Greater Sandplovers too.
ReplyDeleteYour Werribee Curlew Sand. will have to get a move on !
DeleteSpectacular photos, especially those of the Nordmann's - still one of my favorite waders. Love the in-flight shots too and around this time I am certainly missing being able to view these birds myself from the boardwalk. Maybe next year.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeremy, it was good to get the Nordmann's in good light this time.
DeleteNext year , why not ?
I love the way you can identify almost any bird John. I guess it comes with experience.
ReplyDeleteAny trips into China in the coming months?
Thanks, Ah Kei - I think we'll avoid China during the hot summer months… but we've just had a short break in Taiwan, which was very good.
DeleteExcellent flight shots as usual, John! And of course, the Nordmann's Greenshank is always a delight.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ayuwat; It seems we only get the clear bright light right at the end of spring here in HK !
DeleteLovely shots of the Nordmann's Greenshank ..... probably my "most wanted" bird. Hopefully I'll find one this autumn in Taiwan! Cheers.
ReplyDeleteHope you get your "Most Wanted" - thanks for the comment !
