Lesser Frigatebird (Fregata ariel) at the Mai Po boardwalk
Lesser Frigatebird (Fregata ariel)
From the most recent Hong Kong Bird Report - “Scarce spring visitor with other isolated records and some long-staying individuals; most records are of immatures and occur in the first half of the year.”
The book is spot on, in this case !
This individual has been a regular visitor to the Mai Po tideline in the past few weeks.
Viewed from the Boardwalk hides, these are photos taken on 12th and 15th of March.

Would have been a great highlight for me, John. The only frigatebird I have seen is Magnificent Frigatebird and I have always wished for another species for comparison. No such luck so far!
ReplyDeleteDavid - Your chances of a Frigatebird in Canada are probably equal to our chances of getting Snowy Owl !
DeleteReminds me on the one I saw on Lamma many years ago. Great bird - and great pics too, especially the ones against the hi-rises - who would have thought?
ReplyDeleteJeremy - the high-rise around Deep Bay just gets higher.....
ReplyDeleteWow, even the bokeh background birds are interesting!
ReplyDeleteGull-billed Tern, Pied Avocets, Eurasian Curlew and Black-headed Gulls...
